The United Nations (UN) Security Council has taken no action that could lead to the resumption of previous sanctions against Iran, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
The statement came shortly after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said "the United States welcomes the reinstatement of virtually all UN sanctions previously lifted against the Islamic Republic of Iran" and that " sanctions are being reimposed on Iran in accordance with the rollback process provided for by UN Security Council resolution 2231.
"Now they are trying to force everyone to put on 'made in USA' augmented reality glasses and see events around Iran and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, the Iranian nuclear deal) exclusively. through their prism. But the world is not an American video game, ”the statement read.
To claim that UN sanctions against Iran have been reinstated is "wishful thinking," the ministry said, urging the US side to "have the courage to finally face the truth and stop talking to the name of the UN Security Council ".
"This unbridled behavior contrary to the JCPOA and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 constitutes a serious blow by the United States to the authority of the United Nations Security Council, a manifestation of open contempt for its decisions and for international law in general. This is unacceptable ", he stressed.
Efforts to maintain and ensure the sustainable implementation of the JCPOA will continue, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The United States should not escalate the situation, but immediately abandon its plan to destroy the JCPOA and undermine United Nations Security Council resolution 2231," he added.
